Fisker picks GM Ecotec engine for Karma plug-in hybrid

Fisker announced today that it will be using General Motors' engines in its upcoming Karma plug-in hybrid vehicle, which will have a 50-mile electric-only range before the internal combustion engine kicks in to top up the batteries. The 2.0L direct injection, turbocharged four-cylinder Ecotec gasoline engine will deliver 260 horsepower, and Fisker has already confirmed the electric part of the drivetrain will be supplied by Quantum Technologies. Fisker also revealed that is considering sourcing several additional GM vehicle components to enhance the Karma. Fisker CEO Henrik Fisker said that he was "confident that this is the beginning of an important partnership between GM and Fisker in developing the most desirable fuel efficient vehicles of the future." Apparently, GM's ongoing work with extended range electric vehicles was a large motivating factor in helping the partnership to develop. Despite allegations of design theft from Tesla, which Fisker managed to beat comprehensively, Fisker's plans for the Karma are gaining momentum with the announcement that independent vehicle manufacturer Valmet will start constructing the car in Finland next year. The Karma's entry into the market will be interesting, as it will appear in a similar time frame to other hotly anticipated four-door sports cars, such as Porsche's Panamera and the Aston Martin Rapide. Fisker sends Finland good Karma

Back in July we told you that Fisker had tabbed Valmet Automotive to build its upcoming Karma. Now we get word that all of the contracts have been finalized and production looks certain. Valmet will be doing all of the engineering and manufacturing for the Karma, that sexy new four-door plug-in hybrid sports sedan designed by ex-Aston Martin designer, Henrik Fisker. Production should start about a year from now, in late 2009. The first cars should show up Stateside, with European deliveries following soon after, in early 2010. The companies are planning an annual production of about 15,000 cars worldwide. The $80k sedan uses lithium ion batteries, and owners should expect about 50 miles of driving before the gas engine ever kicks in. Range should rival the Chevy Volt at 350 miles per charge. Unlike the Volt, however, the Karma will have a top speed of 125 mph, and a 0-60 time of about 5.8 seconds. Even with the price of gas plummeting, we think Fisker should have little trouble selling 15,000 of these beauties a year, even at $80k. Full press release after the jump.
